From leet1 at pacbell.net Sun Jul 11 23:19:31 2004 From: leet1 at pacbell.net (Lee Teicheira) Date: Sun Jul 11 22:19:30 2004 Subject: [BA-Rockets] [Fwd: Splashdown 2004 on the USS Hornet, July 16-25] Message-ID: <40F21F63.5090807@pacbell.net> Hey all This coming Friday, July 16, is the opening day of the Splashdown 2004 event to be held on the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet. This event celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Apollo 11 & Apollo 12 moon missions. LUNAR has been asked to man a display table during the 9 days of the event, Friday, July 16 through Sunday, July 29. Participation in this display is open to all model rocketeers, not just LUNAR members. That is why I am posting this to the three major rocketry eMail lists in the Bay Area. I am serving as rocket display coordinator for this event. As such, I am in need of volunteers to man the display tables and talk about one of your favorite activities, building and flying model and high power rockets. Volunteers get free admission to the event. Check out the calendar. There is lots of neat stuff going on every day. Volunteer for several days and see it all. I am allowed 4 workers per day. We only need one or two people in the both at a time...:) LUNAR will be setting up a projector or lap top to show a DVD during the show. I may be looking for a projector to borrow. We will also have launch pads available to display rockets with. Did I mention that you can bring your own rockets to use as displays?? And talk about them...:) Rockets, motor casings, electronics, electronics bays, print outs, pictures, videos or anything else that gets you excited (except propellant) is welcome. Display items that can be used for the duration of the show are also welcome. A couple of people mentioned large projects that we might use for the show. Please contact me to confirm. We also have a bunch of giveaway stuff (flyers, stickers). I will gladly accept offers of more giveaway stuff. Contact me. A number of Bay Area rocketeers have already volunteered to help. More are needed!! To those that have already volunteers, Thank You. Please eMail me with days that you are available. The show is open 10am to 5pm every day. But it isn't necessary for you to be there all day. Work what ever you are comfortable with. But I'll tell you what. The Hornet is a cool ship and this is going to be a great event. You will likely want to spend some time there. For those that haven't volunteered yet, now is a great time to do it. Splashdown 2004 information can be found by clicking: Splashdown 2004 or going to: http://www.uss-hornet.org/splash/index.html Here is the list of volunteers that I have so far. Thank you for volunteering and I look forward to hearing from you. More help is needed. Remember, Splashdown 2004 runs for 9 days. This is a great family event presented by the San Ramon Park & Rec Dept where participants learn about rocketry, build their own rocket and then fly it. Last year everyone had a great time. (Here's the online info: http://www.sanramon.ca.gov/econnect4/Activities/ActivitiesCourseDetails.asp?aid=1740&cid=28933) A few details: * San Ramon provides the rocket kits (an alpha or similar model) and motors (a single A6 or A8 motor for each rocket) * All the action is at San Ramon Central Park. The build is inside the community center and we fly outside on a field behind the tennis courts. (Field size is limited so the A motors are a good choice.) * This is a short event: Build session starts at 10am and flying will be from 11:30-12:30. * There will be about 130-150 participants with 65-75 rockets. (Each parent and child works together to build and fly their rocket.) Since everyone gets only one flight (possibly two), it's a wave of folks and then done. Once again, this is a great outreach event where folks who have never flown rockets before get the opportunity to do something exceedingly cool. And it's really cool to help and watch their enjoyment. So... I am co-ordinating LUNAR's assistance and at this point, we are in need of the following: * launchpads (We have 2 but we ought to have at least 5 and up to 10.) * volunteers to help primarily with the launch. (Once again we have 2 but we ought to have at least 5-10.) * Exhibit material (Last year we had a large collection of a variety of rockets for folks to get an idea of what's possible.) * Handouts (Beyond the flyers and cards, any suggestions would be welcome.) Since we have the Hornet event and our July launch in Livermore happening at the same time, we need everyone to consider participating in one of these events. If you've never helped out at a LUNAR event, the San Ramon Rocket Day is a great opportunity. If you have any questions, drop me a line at crs@mtrad.com or give me a call at 925-324-2400 (cell). Volunteers and suggestions are encouraged to contact me! :*) Cheers, Craig From leet1 at pacbell.net Thu Jul 15 17:27:46 2004 From: leet1 at pacbell.net (Lee Teicheira) Date: Thu Jul 15 16:27:42 2004 Subject: [BA-Rockets] Splashdown 2004 - TV needed Message-ID: <40F712F2.5050407@pacbell.net> Hey all Thanks to Greg Wong, we have a really nice DVD to play at Splashdown. What we don't have is a way to play it. Rather than the projector that I requested earlier, a TV of say ~19" would work nicely. Does anybody have a TV we could borrow for a week? And maybe a spare DVD player??? There are a couple of new names on the Volunteers list, but we can still use more. Even a couple of hours after work will help a lot. Right now we only have one name on the volunteer sheet for tomorrow, and that's BayNAR president Marty Krikorian. I plan to be there in the afternoon, after our launch, to bring the banner and some launch pads for display, but could really use a couple more bodies. I know this weekend is a killer and we're spread really thin with the regular launch, the San Ramon Rocket Day also tomorrow, but if you want to get on the Hornet for free, and take all the tours (if there's more than one person at the booth), this is a golden opportunity. There's no minimum amount of time, and the help is needed all week. Whenever you could spare an hour or two (plus driving), it would be worth your while. Hardware request. Even if you can't spare some time, we desperately need a DVD player and monitor/TV to show our promotional video. The Hornet was originally going to provide these, but at the end, could only supply us with electricity. We used Lee's laptop today, which works acceptably well, but a TV would be better. - Jack Jack Hagerty, ARA Press http://www.arapress.com Phone/fax (925) 455-1143 "In terms of sheer coolness, few things beat rocketry." - Paul Allen, co-founder of Microsoft From crs at mtrad.com Sat Jul 17 01:24:24 2004 From: crs at mtrad.com (Craig R. We've all seen what's happened to BayNAR over the last few years without a regular flying field. And with the encroachment of housing next to Robertson Park in Livermore, LUNAR's primary launch site is nearing the end of its useful life. A number of people have made runs at trying to arrange a launch site at Moffett Field. From what I've heard, each had some success but either ran up against an intransigent decision maker or eventually ran out of steam trying to navigate the rat's maze of bureaucracy. I propose that we organize a task force of BayNAR and LUNAR folks to work together to produce a formal proposal to run regular, recurring model rocket launches at Moffett Field, present the proposal to the decision makers, steer it through the approval process and once it's approved, manage the organization of the initial events. There was some informal discussion of this topic at Wednesday's LUNAR meeting. The reason that I'm sending out this message is that we've had this discussion a number of times. And there have been a wide range of suggestions which at face-value seem to be worth trying. Of course, I'm sure that some of them have already been tried. And possibly some haven't been considered yet. So, one of the goals of this project is to collect all of the ideas, those that have been tried and those that haven't. And as a result, we should have the best chance at being successful. One of the suggestions from the LUNAR meeting was that NASA is once again sponsoring Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) for 2005 and that our goal for this project should be to hold qualifying launches for local TARC teams at Moffett Field. I think that this is a excellent idea for a number of reasons - Several TARC 2004 finalists came from the Bay Area and qualified at launches conducted by LUNAR. So we have a track-record and can demonstrate success. It's a NASA program, so there is an inherent reason for Ames Moffett Field to participate. And it also gives us other NASA resources that can provide support. And almost as important, supporting TARC 2005 presents us all with a deadline. It means that we have to get our act together and that decision-makers have to make their decision in a specific time frame or it won't happen. What I'm suggesting is that we put together the kind of proposal that a services firm (advertising, consulting, accounting) would create to land a new, significant customer. Or the kind of proposal that a non-profit organization would create to secure grants for a new program. In fact, that's what we are. It's what we're doing - so we need to show them that's what's behind all of this. At this point, I have started 3 documents: * Outline of a proposal with stuff that has been discussed while I've been in ear-shot. * PowerPoint presentation that will be the executive summary of the proposal. * To-Do list * Collection of information, stories, contacts, links and anything else that might be relevant This will probably be a one-year project and will require the participation and contributions of a number of people. If you are interested in participating or have something to contribute to the effort, please let me know. When we have critical mass, I will schedule a meeting where we can review the past efforts and discuss how to accomplish the objective. Lastly, I want to say that I know that a number of folks have tried to do this before and may still be working it. I don't want to step on anyone's toes. I'd like to help. As do a number of other folks who share your concerns and interests.
